WINGAS was founded in 1993 as a joint undertaking of Wintershall AG (65% stake) and OAO Gazprom, Russia (35%). The strategic alliance has developed to become extremely successful. Today, WINGAS, from its base in Kassel, is a known quantity in the German natural-gas market and employs some 250 members of staff. It operates an ultra-modern pipeline network of more than 1,900 kilometres and the largest natural-gas storage reservoir in western Europe.

The gas industry alliance between Wintershall AG and OAO Gazprom began back in 1990. In the same year, their first joint venture was founded in Berlin as WIEH (Wintershall Erdgas Handelshaus GmbH), with each company holding a 50 percent share. Three years later, WIEH itself formed a Swiss subsidiary, WIEE (Wintershall Erdgas-Handelshaus Zug AG).

Throughout it existence, WINGAS has sold more natural gas year after year. In 2001 it was around 121 billion kWh. Our customer structure: municipal and regional utility companies; pipeline companies; industrial undertakings and power-plant operators.

In 1999 we concluded our biggest ever projects to date: the completion of the JAGAL pipeline and the extension of the Rehden natural gas storage reservoir into the largest of its kind in western Europe.
