EPAGMA was founded on 1 May 2004, and it represents the peat and growing media industry at European level. EPAGMA acts as the interface of peat and growing media companies with regards to the EU institutions and our members are European peat and growing media companies who wish to be informed of political decisions that affect their day-to-day business. EPAGMA currently has sixteen member companies in eleven European countries and a member in each of the Baltic countries and Poland. It is as such a truly European organisation.

EPAGMA aims to contribute to the socio-economic development of regions and communities where peat is sourced and used. EPAGMA is thoroughly committed to high environmental standards and practices in peat extraction as well as the sustainable use of peat as a local energy source.

Peat is a heterogeneous mixture of partly decayed plant matter which has accumulated in a water-saturated environment. Peatlands are the most widespread types of wetlands in the world and cover more than 4 million square km, that is 3% of the land and freshwater surface of the planet.

In several European countries, particularly in the Nordic and Baltic regions, peat provides an important and unique source of heat and power. As a local fuel, it plays an important role in the decentralised and diversified energy system, providing employment and securing energy of supply.
